Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck

What is the procedure?

The tummy tuck procedure, or abdominoplasty, involves the removal of skin and fatty tissue through a wide incision made across the front of the abdomen - and sometimes the 'tightening' of the abdominal muscles. The procedure is carried out under a general anaesthetic, taking some three hours or more, with stitches or clips being left in after surgery and being removed after a week or two. There is likely to be scarring following this procedure, and plenty of rest is needed after the operation. Many patients have to wear a special corset for several weeks after surgery, and little movement is possible for a similar amount of time.

Who is it meant for?

People likely to opt for abdominoplasty include those who believe their abdomen is unattractive because of scarring or 'stretch marks' - perhaps because of previous surgery, multiple pregnancies or severe weight loss. Some people undergo the procedure simply because they simply want to have a flatter abdomen.

Benefits and risks

While there are many perceived benefits associated with the tummy tuck procedure, it is not without its risks. Abdominoplasty is a major surgery and there may be pain for several weeks and numbness for several months after surgery. There will inevitably be a certain amount of scarring and, while the surgeon will try to ensure scarring is in less visible areas, this may not always be possible. The minor risks involved with general anaesthetics, including deep vein thrombosis, should be considered with this procedure.
