Nose Reshaping or Rhinoplasty
What is the procedure?
Nose reshaping, or rhinoplasty, involves changing the size and shape of the nose through the reduction of the nose's bone structure. The operation is carried out under general anaesthetic and lasts around two hours; the patient usually stays in hospital overnight and then has to wear a protective splint for around a week afterwards. Bruising is likely to last for a couple of weeks, with swelling unlikely to disappear completely for several months.
Who is it meant for?
Rhinoplasty is popular with both men and women, with many choosing this surgery because they feel uncomfortable with the shape or size of their nose. Though rhinoplasty is often carried out because the patient is unhappy with their nose, the procedure is also used to correct the nose-shape following accidents or other trauma that have left the nose misshapen or flattened.
Benefits and risks
The benefits of rhinoplasty can include better self-esteem and confidence - particularly for those who have endured teasing or jokes over the size or shape of their nose. There are few risks associated with this type of surgery but a common complaint is a difficulty with breathing; this, however, tends to lessen as the swelling is reduced in the weeks after surgery. There is a small risk of infection - especially if the patient has a cough or cold prior to surgery. There are inherent risks associated with general anaesthetics, such as deep vein thrombosis.
