Liposculpture and Liposuction
What is the procedure?
In general terms, liposuction involves the removal of fatty tissue from the body in order to reshape it. The procedure is carried out on men and women; taking between one hour and two, and is carried out under either general or local anaesthetic. The fat is extracted through a narrow incision using a cannula; the incision is generally sealed with a stitch or two. Most areas of the body can be treated with liposuction; popular areas for men and women include the abdomen, thighs and double chin. The process is not meant to be a cure for obesity; the amount of fat that can be removed at any one time is limited and therefore the procedure is not suited to very overweight people.
Who is it meant for?
Few surgeons will advise liposuction as a method for controlling weight as the amount of fat removed is small in proportion to overall body weight; rather, it is recommended for the removal of fatty tissue that proves difficult to shift through exercise and dieting. Many women choose the procedure because they feel that their bodies are disproportionately shaped, perhaps with a tendency to store extra fat on the buttocks, while men often choose liposuction because they feel that they have 'breasts'. Others use the procedure as a way to motivate them to maintain a healthier lifestyle through a better diet and increased exercise.
Benefits and risks
Liposuction can lead to an increase in confidence and self-esteem - though you should be aware that the results of the procedure can be less dramatic then expected. In addition, the area involved can be bruised and swollen for several months, with initial discomfort and moderate pain. The area where the procedure is carried out can remain numb for many weeks. As with all procedures involving general anaesthetic, there are inherent risks including deep vein thrombosis - but these complications are rare.
