Celebrity Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is becoming increasingly popular among Plain Janes who want to boost their appearance, with celebrities leading the way.

"I've had Botox and collagen" - Teri Hatcher

Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher is looking more fabulous these as the ditzy Susan than a decade ago when she was Superman's muse Lois Lane in the popular TV series. But her good looks are thanks to more than just a fortunate genetic disposition. "I've had Botox and collagen," the 41-year-old Teri admits.

And the truth is that cosmetic surgery is no longer limited to the stars on the red carpet, but that increasing numbers of girls-next-door are opting for a little nip and tuck. No longer content with a monthly facial, women these days consider cosmetic surgery as the new ultimate beauty treatment.

TV shows like 10 Years Younger are showing women that undergoing cosmetic surgery could quite literally cut years off your appearance. Chemical peels, eyelid lifts and Botox have all been proved to reduce lines, blemishes and sagginess on even the most weathered faces.

But it's not just older women considering cosmetic surgery. Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson is just 21, but says she "definitely" believes in cosmetic surgery. "I don't want to be an old hag, there's no fun in that," the Lost in Translation actress said.

Oscar nominee Keira Knightley, 20, agrees. "I know that my looks won't last forever," the Pride and Prejudice star says. "In five years' time I will probably already be past it and having Botox, face-lifts, nose jobs and false hair."

The truth is that one in ten British women have already undergone cosmetic surgery, a survey by Grazia magazine revealed last year. Of those surveyed, nearly three-quarters said the procedure has made their lives better, with almost half saying they have changed jobs and partners as a result of their improved looks. The magazine's editor Jane Bruton commented on the results, saying: "Times have changed since the only option for saggy breasts was to buy a better bra."

Demi Moore and Victoria Beckham are just two celebrities who have gone under the knife to boost their bust or reduce their curves. Their subtle approach focused on enhancement of their existing assets and their bigger chests are in proportion to the rest of their bodies.

In comparison, glamour model Jordan and Baywatch star Pamela Anderson's look top-heavy following their cosmetic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty - or a nose job - is also a popular form of cosmetic surgery among A-listers. The Parent Trap star Natasha Richardson has made no secret of her joy following her nose job. She is convinced that she became a more popular actress following cosmetic surgery to her nose.

Likewise, Sharon Osbourne had a career revival after a bit of nip and tuck. The wife of rocker Ozzy came out of her shell following cosmetic surgery, which included a face lift and breast augmentation, among other procedures. A natural beauty, Michelle Pfeiffer opted for conservative cosmetic surgery in the form of rhinoplasty and cheek implants to achieve her current looks.

Michael Jackson...a poster child for cosmetic surgery gone horribly wrong

Michael Jackson, who is somewhat of a poster child for cosmetic surgery gone horribly wrong, embarked on the road of cosmetic surgery in 1984 at the age of 26. The singer, whose dad nicknamed him Big Nose, started off by narrowing his nose slightly and having his eyebrows lifted. Today, more than two decades later, he has had to undergo many more cosmetic surgery procedures to restore a partially collapsed nose.

But for the majority of women choosing cosmetic surgery, the procedure only serves to enhance their natural beauty. Like the Grazia editor says: "In the last decade or so, having cosmetic surgery has become as normal as having your hair done and there's no shame in doing it any more."

The trick of the trade however, is to choose cosmetic surgery that doesn't make you look like a Michael Jackson Thriller but like a sensational Sharon or magnificent Michelle instead.
