Breast Uplift - Mastopexy
What is the procedure?
Breast uplift, or mastopexy, involves the removal of loose skin and the nipple being repositioned. The procedure can also include the insertion of implants if extra breast size is required. The surgery generally takes around two hours and is always done under general anaesthetic. It will involve the insertion of stitches, which have to removed several days after surgery, and the patient will have to wear a sports bra for up to three months afterwards.
Who is it meant for?
Women are likely to choose mastopexy because their breasts have lost some of their tissue - either after pregnancy and breast-feeding, because of the ageing process, or because of substantial weight loss. In many cases this leads to a lack of confidence.
Benefits and risks
The benefits of mastopexy are generally cosmetic, leading to a more desirable body shape and often more self-confidence for the patient. There will inevitable be a certain amount of scarring, which may last a long time, and there may be pain for several weeks. In the vast majority of cases breast-feeding will not be possible after surgery, and there is also likely to be a change or loss in nipple sensation. General anaesthetic risks include deep vein thrombosis, but such risks are rare.
