Breast Reduction
What is the procedure?
Breast reduction surgery generally takes about three hours and is completed under general anaesthetic. The operation involves the removal and uplift of breast tissue, with the nipple being moved upwards on the breast. While there is inevitably permanent scarring after this operation, the scars fade and become less noticeable over time. After surgery, the patient will have to wear a sports bra 24 hours a day for up to three months, to support the breasts while they heal.
Who is it meant for?
Many women choose breast reduction because they feel their breasts are too big - either from a cosmetic point of view or because they are so big that they cause discomfort. In some cases, women suffer from severe backache because of the weight of their breasts. In addition, women with larger breasts can find buying clothing and underwear difficult, and many avoid wearing more revealing clothing because of their shape.
Benefits and risks
As well as cosmetic benefits, many women find breast reduction enables them to follow a more active lifestyle and participate in more sport - as well as achieving a better posture. The procedure is not risks, however - scars from this surgery can last a long time. In addition, most women who undergo this surgery are unable to breast-feed afterwards because the nipples are normally detached from the underlying breast tissue during the procedure. Many also report a loss of sensation in the nipples. As with all surgery involving general anaesthetic, there are inherent risks including deep vein thrombosis, but this is a rare occurrence.
