Breast Enlargement
What is the procedure?
Breast enlargement surgery is normally carried under general anaesthetic and generally takes between one and two hours. An implant - either silicon or saline - is implanted into the breast through an incision around five centimetres long, most commonly made in the crease under the breast but also in the armpit or under the areola. Stitches will be required after surgery; these will normally be removed around seven days after surgery though some surgeons also use dissolvable stitches. You will have to wear a sports bra for up to three months after surgery - this will provide support and comfort during this time.
Who is it meant for?
There are many reasons why women choose to undergo breast enlargement. Breast size can be reduced following pregnancy and childbirth, and also because of weight-loss; enlargement can help to rejuvenate the appearance of the breast. Few women's breasts are symmetrical - this can be achieved through enlargement of one or both breasts. Breasts that have not fully developed can be treated in this way, and many women choose to have their breasts enlarged because they believe it will better their self-esteem.
Benefits and risks
The benefits of breast enlargement are largely to do with self-esteem and confidence, and there are some risks involved with this procedure. There are inherent risks associated with general anaesthetics, such as deep vein thrombosis, and as with any type of invasive surgery, there will be a certain amount of scarring follwing breast enlargement. In rare cases the site can become infected, and some women report a change in nipple sensation following the procedure.
